本日、UNION BANKに行き、Money Orderを頼みに行きました。
アメリカは、支払いはクレジットカードでいいのかと思っていたのですが、郵送するものの支払いとか家賃とかは、Check（小切手）で行われます。また、学校への寄付や塾・チューターなどの支払いもCheckが多い。前任者は単身で来ていてCheckなんてほとんど使わなかったそうですが、私は、一年半で4冊目に突入しました。
さて、領事館に子供の教科書を頼んだり、パスポート費を頼むのですが、そこでの現金の引き渡しは、CheckはNGでMoney Orderになります。Money Orderに関しては、作成時にそれと同等の金額のお金が必要になりますので、いわゆる不渡りが発生しません。また、取り扱いは、コンビニ・スーパーでもやっています。銀行に口座があれば、銀行で作ることができます。しかも、銀行のいいのは、発行手数料が0というメリットがあります。
ということで、早速、窓口でMoney Orderを頼みました。こちらの銀行は、並ぶラインが用意されていますが、いつ行っても、待ち時間ゼロです。窓口でMoney Orderが欲しいというと、まず、自分の銀行のカードをスワイプし、暗証番号を入れ、そこからあとは、相手先の情報、自分の名前、サイン、口座番号、金額を入れれば終わりです。えっ、口座番号?と思いましたが、窓口の人が、紙に書いて渡してくれました。あとは、プリントし、サインをして終わりです。
アメリカの場合、現金はあまり使いませんが、クレジットカードの他に、Check、Money Orderとちょっと複雑です。Checkは銀行口座がないとできないので、こちらに銀行口座がない人は、Money Orderを頻繁に使わなければいけません。
クレジットカードにしても、ガソリンスタンドは、Zipコードを入れる必要があります。Zipコードって、日本のカードで、日本の郵便番号をいれたら、NGで買えません。日本のクレジットカードの場合は、ガソリンスタンドのカウンターで清算しなければいけません。入れたあとは、NGなので、入れる前に、ある程度、給油量を予測していかないと。。

ELD（English Language Development) ― 2015年11月12日 16:15
娘の学校から以下のメッセージが、要は、カリフォルニアの英語の年一回の試験を受けた結果と、日常のLanguage Arts（国語）とSocial Science(社会)の様子を見て、もう、ELD（English Language Development)を受けなくてもいいレベルになったので、来週までに、今まで通り（ELDを受け続ける）か、ELD無しの新しい時間割にするかを決めてくださいというお知らせです。
現在、ELD1というクラスを受けていて、試験結果でELD2に上がれるかどうかという話をしていました。
それが、まさか、ELD2を通り越して受けなくてもいいレベルになっているとは思いませんでした。
ELDを受ける場合は、通常の授業6時間に加えて、0時間目があり、毎日7時間授業を受けることになります。それを受けなくていいとなるとすごい進歩。もはや、私の英語の能力をはるか超えて上のレベルに行ってしまったんだなあ。。。と思いました。
Dear Parents or Guardians:
State and federal laws require all school districts in California to give a state test of English proficiency to students whose primary language is not English. A student’s primary language is identified on a home language survey, which is completed by parents or guardians upon registering their child in a California public school for the first time. In California, the name of the state test is the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). The results of the CELDT help to measure how each student is progressing toward proficiency in English in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Your child has been given the CELDT for the current school year, and your child has made one level’s growth or more towards proficiency in English according to the preliminary scores on CELDT. As a result of your child’s growth in English, based on their CELDT score and their academic progress in Language Arts and Social Studies, we are recommending the following new schedule for your child:
1st period: Science
2nd period: Orchestra
3rd period: Language Arts
4th period: Social Studies
5th period: PF
6th period: Math
Option 1 would be for your child to start in this new schedule on Monday, November 30, 2015.
Option 2 would be for your child to remain in his or her current schedule.
