◆National and State Requirements （Child Home Alone Laws in California）◆

There is no federal law in the United States that dictates the age a child may be left home alone. While many state governments have taken it upon themselves to specify an appropriate age, California has no law on record. In the Golden State, it is generally up to the parent’s discretion to decide if her child is mature and ready to be left alone.

Factors may include the child's age and maturity, the overall safety of the surrounding area/circumstances, and arrangements made to secure the child's safety.

Below are general guidelines to follow when considering the age range for leaving a child home alone.

7 & under - Should not be left alone for any period of time. This may include leaving children unattended in cars, playgrounds, and backyards. The determining consideration would be the dangers in the environment and the ability of the caretaker to intervene.

8 to 10 years - Should not be left alone for more than 1½ hours and only during daylight and early evening hours.

11 to 12 years - May be left alone for up to 3 hours but not late at night or in circumstances requiring inappropriate responsibility.

13 to 15 years - May be left unsupervised, but not overnight.

16 to 17 years - May be left unsupervised (in some cases, for up to two consecutive overnight periods).

よく、ハワイに観光に行かれる人は、レンタカーを借りる時などに注意されるので知っている方も多いと思います。これは注意していないといけません。うちの娘は12歳の時に、日本から来た友達と親と一緒に郵便局に行き、列で待っているのがかったるいので、はずれて話をしていたら、他の大人に、「何をしているの？」と聞かれました。もちろん、自分の歳を言って、親はそこにいるといえばいいのですが、対象の年齢のお子さんが、外で大人がいない状態で行動していると同様に通報されます。
それでいて、会社などの公式のパーティは配偶者同伴なのです。そういう時は、ベビーシッターを頼むとか友人の家にお世話になるなどをしなければいけません。
